fomapan 400 vs hp5
Shooting: A Praktica LTL And Expired Konica 400. Sort: Clear All. So I opted to push in developing. It is, I believe, well known that Foma is a go-to choice for relabeled black-and-white film stocks, and evidence suggests that three of FPPs monster films are actually Fomapan 100, 200 and 400 respectively (the fourth appears to be Orwo UN54). Ive always liked the look Ive been getting, and can definitely see a uniqueness from HP5 and Tri-X. Fomapan 400 does not push well. Hey thanks a ton! I'm highly likely to use all rolls before they expire, and in any case it's B&W film so it's good for a few years beyond the expiry date. The Kentmere also shows a little halation, but only when the light is very concentrated and higher than a few stops from what Im exposing for. Man Im so glad to here this helped! Portrairs are fabulous with this fim, thanks to its savantly cirrected spectral sensitiviry. Lens shutting down to aperture correctly? That stuff came in handy as I dabbled in that artsy stuff. . I especially echo the advice to put a piece of masking tape or sticky label on the loader with some info written on it.type of film loaded, length of the roll, date loaded, expiry date (if known)I also write numbers "2 4 6 8 10 12 14 18" and cross them out when load 35mm cassettes so I have a rough idea how many I've made and how much film is left. Take a look at the spec sheet of these Foma films, they say you can go +1 and -1 on exposure without any compensation on development. Im not an authority on development my interest lies in the shooting experience, and for me this ends when the shutter is pressed. Close . Generally you heat up the chemicals to 80F and use constant agitation. Hand held light meter perfect? Print Email. However I really wanted to get better negatives. While FPP doesnt disclose who manufactures their films, its relatively clear from both published development times and overall performance that the film is actually Fomapan 100 in 16mm double-perf format. I own the 21 for long time and quite like it. If we e.g. look at the development times for HP5+ in Rodinal 1+50 for different exposures, you find the following numbers: 7 minutes @25ASA. I've used both and much prefer the look of HP5. I think Fomapan is great for a variety of situations. The images more often than not remind of me Tri-X at box speed that prevailing grey-tone is distinct. I havent had great results with Foma 200 developing it here. Now that I have almost finished my 30m of Fomapan 400, I am thinking about the next batch of bulk film and I am tempted to switch to Ilford, but I am not sure! D-76 is OK. Foma has high grain. This article started as a write up about my time shooting these two emulsions over a long bank holiday weekend, where I had similar lighting conditions and was able to shoot similar exposures across both Fomapan and Kentmere rolls. Personally I prefer 100 speed films for 35mm. There are a lot of strident voices in the forums saying they know better than the film manufacturer. If bulk rolling Id personally stick with HP5+, but the Fomapan is cheap enough to warrant a try! Hopefully the results above prove me right. Some people maintain that it has that vintage TriX feel from the 60s. Grain is an interesting one, as different developers will offer different granular results. Foma Fomapan 400 Action Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 100' Roll) You Pay: $69.99 (55) Add to Cart View Cart. And one further note here. https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=63964930%40N05&sort=date-taken-desc&text=fomapan%20400&view_all=1. Ive shot Tri-X before, but my preference is HP5+! I got the same results. Fix, rinse, hypo clear, wash and surfactant as normal / desired. I should try Kentmere 400 next then. I take my results at 400 and, more often than not, am happy with them. Bottom line: All three provide very similar results; choose the speed based on your shoot needs, camera capabilities, and environment. I really disliked Fomapan 400. Your writeup has made it clear what direction I need to move with this on the next round and I thank you for that! DD-X is already to go. Whether thats true or not, it is widely known that Arista film (Freestyles house brand) is repackaged Foma; the Holga branded film sold by Freestyle is as well; and, Kosmo Fotos Stephen Dowling has been quite open about his ISO 100 film being Foma too. Now that Im retired, I like instant gratification slip into the darkroom whenever I need to process filmpour, dilute, temp check, time/temp compensate and process. Id say that Fomapan 400 is fairly low grain, but largegrained very visible, but not bad to my eye. However I think there are some quite distinguished features to the grains of these films that should remain constant regardless of the technique used. I found you had to be more accurate with exposure (i.e. While I do like HP5 and Tri-X, for me it is nice to have a more budget stock. Thanks Matthias! Switched to Kentmere 400, got rid of a lot of frustration and put the fun is back in photography! Even if it does mean Im not using half the functions of the camera like auto exposure and focus. Alex LuyckxFebruary 22, 2022 Share When it comes to Fomapan film, results and opinions are mixed. A few shots on the roll looked flat and lifeless, no matter what I did to them in Photoshop. I have also used Kentmere 400 and gotten good results. Update: May 26, 2021Added a notation that the Fomapan data sheets indicate that the anti-halation dye clears during development, but that it has not been my experience that it does. My look at Foma 100 and 200 is to see how close it is to that. No items to compare. Content contributor- become a part of the worlds biggest film and alternative photography community blog. Ive commented before the the blog-o-sphere is chock full of inaccuracies, especially when it comes to film photography. I have used the HP5+ a good bit and am satisfied with it, but I see that Fomapan is much cheaper. Tags: Black and White NegativeFomaMedium FormatReview. However I really wanted to get better negatives. Ya fomapan 400 is such a strange film, but I really do love it for that. Those came out the cleanest! Graflex Speed Graphic Pacemaker, Fujinon 1:5.6/180 Developed in Cinestill DF96, scanned on Epson V600 (in 2 pieces and stitched together as the scanner . Even EI 800 will be a struggle in certain circumstances. But, there is a price difference. Currently, Tri-X is probably my favorite of the 3, but Fomapan is becoming quite the competitor. And youre right, that 50/1.8 is a peach. You answered my earlier question here! Really glad you found it useful! The blogs and forums all say that Fomapan 400 looks best when shot at EI 160 or 200. Required fields are marked *. Looking at B&H, Kentmere 400 is about three dollars less than either HP5 or Tri-X, which is pretty significant. I feel that maybe I could take the developer to even 90 as some of the images still look a bit underexposed. Happy shooting! Subscribehere. Kentmere 400 feels like Tri-X with less dynamic range. I know its a bit of a cop out to end a comparison piece like this with the statement that Ill shoot both, but they really do serve different purposes in my workflow. Some great shots here, but the man smoking in the bus is just terrific. Fomapan on the other hand seems underexposed when shot at box speed. Ive read more wrong stuff on the internet, that seems to be supported by others parroting the wrong stuff, until it seems like its the correct info! But the box says 400. Ilford Pan 400 is easy to develop and no different to Kentmere 400 in that regard. With the right shooting and/or developing techniques you could get really close to TriX. Add to Wish List. If theres one film that you want to avoid scratching on at any cost, its 35mm! While Simon is stand-developing in DDX, Im using the Cinestill Df96 monobath. Fomapan gives a high contrast result in most situations, including even/overcast light. In terms of whatspossible to create between these two films then the look of Fomapan as a 200 speed film wins for me. It has more highlight bleed and halation than Kentmere, but this is rarely overwhelming in the way it may be on something like Cinestill 800t. Fomapan 400 4x5, first one exposed at 100 and developed normal, second exposed 300 and pushed 1 stop in developement. Simon, nice job! It performs surprisingly well in that tiny little format. The high contrast results really lent a wonderful aesthetic to those images, and Im glad I didnt choose to take Kentmere. But when its off, its pretty meh for me. There is no longer that very obvious and annoying halation or muddiness in the prints. Also, I emailed Foma to complain about the inconsistent quality of their film. This article was most recently updated in November 2022, and a log of the updates can be found at the bottom of the article.). Sign up here. The look of Kentemere reminds me of those surveillance films, or JHC400, so maybe that would be the most direct comparison. :-(. I want to try the films out myself now. There are several 5 Frames With articles Ive written here on 35mmc which look at some of the results from these different exposure combinations with Fomapan 400. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the two, and make a few comparisons where appropriate in order to help guide people towards making a choice between perhaps the most popular budget black and white films on the market. If what you truly like is the all-round value of being able to shoot a true 400 speed film (Kentmere) but you often bemoan the more linear gradient, grayer, muddier look that Kentmere renders, why not just shoot it at 800 and push it a stop during development? Not. HP5+ is an exemplary film, and definitely worth the extra cost. I dont use the 400 enough to have figured out the best EI yet. Plus, youd be stuck with about 18 rolls of the stock, so you better hope that you really liked that emulsion that much. Fantastic review! (I have a lab develop and scan.). Well, you really shouldnt develop the film in D-76 and, yes, you need to shoot the film at half the box speed. Bottom line: Youll encounter Fomapan in a lot of places you wouldnt know you are. A couple of the flat shots benefited from reducing exposure in Photoshop, at cost of enhancing the grain. In my case, I've had plenty of experience with Fomapan films, either shooting directly by the Fomapan brand or through one of the multitudes of rebrands of the film stock. Well done! I always like your reviews and commentariesthey come from a perspective of a workingman photographer. I used both but I prefer HP5+ as my goto 400 iso film. . I actually received my Ultrafine today and am going to try and load it into the loader tonight. If you're in Germany Fotoimpex also sells a selfbranded stock called CHM 100/400 which is supposedly the same as Kentmere. Fomapan 400 is a wonderful film in the right developer (I use Fomadon LQN and expose at 320 EI). Hey Dave! (Never shot Ilford) I am definitely going to try Kentmere. Ilford HP5 and Tri-X look absolutely stunning with this developer. Thank you for sharing these shots and your thoughts and observations. These images show how much information is available in these highlights when metered and exposed dead-on, as well as what detail is retained within the shadows and what is lost. And its sepsitivity to colors is juuust right. Thanks! Ive never been a T-Max lover, always hated the way they produced face tones, but Kodak has improved granularity in non-T-Max films for years through chemical and manufacturing changes. I deliberately chose frames with similar tones so it would be a bit trickier. Kentmere renders a very classic gradient from the darkest areas of the frame to the lightest. Unless I pre-soak and rinse the film before the developer, I do so thoroughly after dumping-off the developer to ensure that none of the vivid green anti-halation dye remains to avoid polluting my stop both with it; with that level of rinse, the stop is probably redundant, but I do it anyway. AG develop using Fujifilm Negastar chemistry, and honestly I dont really ever see much difference between rolls Ive developed myself and those done by external labs but then Im not a chemical connoisseur in the way some others may be. These days, I primarily shoot 100 Classic, in large part because I use Fomapan a great deal in the testing of vintage cameras Ive repaired or restored, and their limited shutter speeds and apertures make it difficult to properly expose on a bright, sunny day with fast ISO 400 film. Happy shooting! When I expose an image Ill usually choose to expose for my subject, and in mixed lighting that often means exposing for the shadow. I keep my bulk loaders in a drawer under my bed, reasonably consistent temperature.but I never cool or freeze them. What a difference! I love 400iso. Update: November 28, 2021Updated pricing references and made a few minor edits. Hp5 is the masters master film. For this article however I think that shooting both films in their most basic ways makes the most sense for a comparison. Fomapan 400 is garbage film comparing to hp5+. Fascinating that Foma knows they over-rated their films. Kentmere seems to be accurately rated at 400, and Ive never been inclined to shoot it over/under, or even to push or pull it. Great shots, Simon! I got on my high horse and wrote an email to Foma to complain. Im pleased with these images except for the graininess and lack of definition in the shadows. Nice results, that selfie is sharp indeed! Quite frankly, I deeply dislike BW films that are too sensitive to red. (Free 3-day trial). ALL my posts are to be read with an aMaZeBaLLs BARRY WHITE voice. Another suggestion would be to shoot Kentmere 400 at box speed, but through a yellow or orange filter to boost the contrast. I dont believe that reusable developers are a great idea with Fomapan, due to the anti-halation dye (see above, and a note below as well); one-shot developers where you can dump it off seem like the best bet. The images above all felt under exposed. I like the grain of the 400ISO and the sharpness of the 100ISO. roll of Fomapan 400 and bought a 100ft. It is only about of half of what is rated on the specs. MUSIC CREDITINGYouTube Studio Music Call me stubborn, but I always shoot a film for the first time at box speed.
